JISH Expansion Project

The growth in peak demand and price volatility is spurring the need and value of increasing natural gas storage capabilities in the United States. Storage of natural gas in salt domes is one of the best methods to protect against supply interruptions, mitigate high natural gas prices, and accommodate production and receipt of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Gulf Coast. Today, salt domes supply 8 percent of natural gas storage in the U.S. To meet the increased demand for natural gas storage, AGL Resources, through Pivotal, plans to expand its storage facility at JISH, a natural gas salt-dome storage facility located near the Henry Hub at Erath, Louisiana in Vermillion and Iberia Parishes.

A JISH expansion provides additional and needed natural gas storage and hub services with direct connections to the Henry Hub, where natural gas is piped in from the Gulf of Mexico.

Natural gas salt dome storage offers an increased level of surety of supplies for Louisiana natural gas users, as well as for customers outside of the state. During times when shortages of natural gas supplies can take place, as was demonstrated after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005, the need for safe and dependable storage facilities is underscored.

Expanding JISH offers several advantages as it will:

  • Expand working gas capacity from 7.5 million Dth (MMDth) to 20 MMDth.
  • Improve deliverability through header expansion and increase pipeline interconnects.
  • Help meet the growing demand for natural gas regionally and nationally.
  • Help stabilize the supply and price of natural gas.
  • Increase the availability and reliability of natural gas during emergencies like Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.
  • Increase local and state economic benefit.
