Safety
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) considers salt dome cavern storage safer than other storage methods for hydrocarbons. Salt dome caverns have been used for more than 60 years to store oil, natural gas and other hydrocarbons. Salt dome caverns designed, built and operated specifically for natural gas storage have a particularly stellar safety record. There have been no incidents of fire, accidental releases or explosions in caverns developed specifically for natural gas storage.
Jefferson Island Storage & Hub (JISH) facilities are closely examined by regulators for construction and operations. Before construction on the cavern expansion can begin, it is necessary for local, state and federal agencies to approve JISH’s applications or permits to build and complete the project
